All About WMD Protective Clothing

Level A is fully encapsulated chemical protective clothing that is vapor-tight and liquid-tight. This suit has incorporated gloves and boots and a gas-tight zipper. The responder will have the self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) inside the suit.


Level A shows 3 people with encapsulated suit with attached gas-tight gloves and boots Level B shows 2 people in protective clothing associated with splash protection
Level C shows a person with a Level C suit, PAPR or APR, Helmet, Inner and Outer gloves and outer boots Level D shows a person wearing level D clothing which is work clothing, which may include helmet, safety glasses, work clothes, safety shoes/boots, and chemical/work gloves

 

Level A ensemble consists of:

  • Encapsulated suit with attached gas-tight gloves and boots
  • Inner and outer gloves
  • SCBA
  • Overboots
  • Helmet (optional)
  • Communication system (optional)
  • Cooling system (optional)

Level B is protective clothing associated with splash protection. Level B requires the use of an SCBA outside the suit. Level B ensemble consists of:

  • Level B suit
  • Inner and outer gloves
  • SCBA
  • Outer boots
  • Helmet (optional)
  • Communication system (optional)

Level C suit is used where splashes may occur, but where respiratory hazards are minimal and are covered by the use of a powered-air-purifying-respirator (PAPR) or air-purifying-respirator (APR). Level C ensemble consists of:

  • Level C suit
  • PAPR or APR
  • Helmet
  • Inner and outer gloves
  • Outer boots

Level D is work clothing, which may include helmet, safety glasses, work clothes, safety shoes/boots, and chemical/work gloves.
