Introduction to the Forensic Analysis of Glass

Course dates to be announced

This one-week course is designed as an introduction to the forensic analysis of glass evidence. The course is open to crime laboratory employees currently training in or performing forensic glass examinations. The class will include both lectures and practical exercises. Students will learn the manufacturing and chemical make-up of the primary compositional classes of glass and the glass products most frequently encountered by the forensic scientist, followed by the theory and practice of glass fractography and glass particle analysis. The latter will include the identification of glass, the determination of physical properties, density, refractive index, and the elemental analysis of glass. Students will be exposed to various interpretive methods in order to assess the significance of the results.
